Summer activities on a budget

Most people look forward to summer and vacation throughout the year. It is a period when we have time to perhaps travel and spend more time with friends and family than we normally do in everyday life when we work or studying. At the same time, it can often be a period with a lot of expenses because of the unwritten rules and demands that you have to see and experience a lot of things — that is costing money.

Therefore, we have compiled a list of summer activities that are budget-friendly. These activities allow you to fill your summer with great memories and have a fun time without stressing that you have overdrawn your budget.

15 budget-friendly activities for summer

  1. Sleep outside. It’s supercozy to sleep under the stars right? Why not in the garden, on the balcony or in a tent somewhere?
  2. Go out and collect some eatable berries and plants and cook something from it. Do your research on what else than mushrooms and blueberries you can eat from the nature.
  3. Find nice walking trails and be gone on a hike! In Sweden we have a lot of nice places to hike. To find places in Sweden that fits your mood, visit Svenska Turistföreningen.
  4. Read online on what events that are planned in your local area! Maybe there is some workout sessions, movies outdoors or a free class somewhere that you can join.
  5. Be a tourist in your own city! Actually there is some apps that offers citywalks with soundtracks and stories about your city. For example, Guide U.

6. Have a picnic! Gather some friends, have a potluck and sit down on a blanket on a nice spot.

7. Go and listen to the birds in the woods. There is an app called WhatBird that you can use to record the bird twitters around you and get information on what kind of bird you are hearing.

8. Go to a nice lookout point and watch the sunset or sunrise.

9. Switch home with someone for a week! It’s a good way to change your surroundings but avoid paying expensive money to rent a place. For example you can use Hembyte.

10. Go on a photowalk and shoot according to a theme that you choose beforehand. Maybe flowers, plants or completely something else.

11. Geocaching. Use a GPS-unit to find treasures (also called cashers) and log those in an app like this.

12. Workout on an outdoor gym! In Sweden more and more outdoor gym’s are beeing built. It’s available for everyone for free. Use Utegymsappen to locate were your nearest outdoor gym is.

13. Look up at the stars. There is an app, Night Sky, you can use to see what stars you are looking at.

14. Take your bike to the nearest lake or sea and take a morning dip. Probably there is no better way to start your morning.

15. Have a flee-market day! Dedicate a day to go to several yardsales, markets with secondhand goods and find something for a nice price.
